Jens Jacob Asmussen Worsaae (1821–1885) (Fig. 1) was a Danish archaeologist and museum director, who created the basis for the development of prehistoric archaeology as a scientific discipline in the mid-nineteenth century.

He was the fifth of eleven children born into a wealthy, educated family.
